Commercial Food Waste
Proposed changes from 31st March 2025
Is your business ready?
By 31st March 2025, businesses will have to adhere to new legislation which requires separate food waste collections.
These changes are being introduced following a recent Government consultation. The aim is to streamline waste management processes and reduce the impact of food waste on the environment.
What does it mean for businesses?
-
Mandatory separate food waste collection
From 31 March 2025, all non-municipal premises will need to arrange for separate food waste collections. This includes businesses with 10 or more staff, institutions, and other non-residential buildings that generate any amount of food waste.
-
Presentation of food waste
All food waste will need to be segregated from other types of waste and stored in designated bins or containers, ready for collection.
-
Failure to comply
Businesses who do not follow the legislation will face potential penalties.
How can I prepare?
Final details of the food waste legislation will be confirmed in the coming weeks. In the meantime, all businesses can start to prepare with two simple actions:
-
Review your waste collections
Look at how your food waste is currently being collected and disposed of. Will this meet the requirements of the new legislation or do changes need to be made?
-
