Simpler Recycling
Covering all waste streams from 31st March 2025
Recycling for all businesses by 31st March 2025
Simpler Recycling legislation was introduced in 2023 by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) to help make the recycling process easier for both domestic and commercial waste collections.
Alongside commercial food waste regulations, businesses are required to have recycling practices in place for all recyclable waste streams, except garden waste and plastic film, by 31st March 2025.
Does this apply to my business?
The legislation applies to businesses and other non-household premises such as schools and hospitals with 10 or more full-time employees.
What changes will my business need to make?
By 31st March 2025, the legislation requires plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (cans, tins and foil) and food waste to be segregated and collected for recycling, keeping them separate from from general waste.
By 31st March 2027, the legislation will also apply to recyclable plastic film.
The Simpler Recycling initiative is saving valuable resources from going to waste and supporting the UK's circular economy.
